I commute by cable car too, here in La Paz Bolivia http://www.lapazlife.com/the-worlds-highest-cable-car-ride/

As a Swiss living in Bolivia I really enjoy the Teleferico in La Paz. It's truly magnificent to fly over the city - something that you can't experience in Switzerland.

Btw: The cable cars cabins in La Paz are built by CWA Constructions - A Swiss company.

I was just in La Paz and was going to make sure it got recognition as well. What a beautiful city.

> To the farming families of Switzerland’s Engelberg region, cable cars aren’t built for ski holidays and scenic views

The simple farmer's cable cars are used by skiers as well though. The terrain around Engelberg is excellent for skiing and many skiers use them (paying a small fee to the farmers) to reach areas not heavily skied like the nearby resort

And those are only the ones which are officially allowed to carry people.

The idea of using ski lifts in cities has been around for a while. https://www.wired.com/2012/11/austin-gondola/

I still wish for this in Austin. :(

Thanks for sharing! I've been trying to decide whether to go to Gimmelwald on a holiday in June (no cars, cable car and hiking access only) and this might be just enough to convince.

IIRC a gondola cableway is one of the cheapest means of transportation to build (compared to railway tracks and trains, or bus systems if you would need to develop streets first).

[Spoilers] It's Switzerland.
