That is called life. There is no vacation when you have a sick spouse, or bought a new house, or are in a car accident. Your job shouldn't be your break, regardless of your situation.
My wife is at a FAANG company currently covering for 4 people who all get double digit weeks off because they chose to have children. Does she get any time off for literally working 18 hour days 7 days a week? No of course not.
She has to work 18 hours a day? 7 days a week?? That doesn't sound like it's the fault of her coworkers on parental leave, that sounds like it's an issue with her manager.
Even before COVID, work was my sanity time—my sanctuary. A place with clear goals, a structured path to convert effort into success, a place where I am relatively respected and know what I’m doing. Home with children is more of a messy, emotional, soft-skill-driven, chaotic zoo. Getting a little time off to do more of that is not really a vacation.
Really it’s the workers fault when one of the richest companies in the history of the world is working someone to the bone because they can’t figure out staffing?
> have a sick spouse or bought a new house, or are in a car accident.
This made me laugh a little because they’re such bad examples unless you’re American. Universal healthcare and sane house prices make these specifically the times you can and should slow down.
The US isn't the only country with insane housing prices - and they are only insane in portions of the country. Look @ buying a house in London or Amsterdam for example.
Although US healthcare is fd though (@ work, not sure if the full f word would trigger something :)
> Now consider that 18 hours of work for Waterluvian right now would be an 18 hour holiday. It's all relative.
It really wouldn't though, or they'd happily work 18 hours a day, just to enjoy the holiday, and then retire in a year or two, to enjoy their permanent holiday. They don't, obviously, because it's just a thing to say that sounds cool.
